Riley Smith

I have known James Hustace for the last nine years. He was raised in Waimea, graduated from Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, obtained Bachelor's and Master’s degrees, and returned home to serve his community. His roots in the community are multi-generational. He is smart, easily grasps complex concepts, hard-working, puts in the time, meets with constituents, and takes the time to engage and talk story. Most importantly, he is a good listener. For these reasons, I wholeheartedly support his candidacy for County Council District 9.

Julia Alos

James is a selflessly dedicated, true community leader who intently listens - seeking to understand the challenges our district faces and will work diligently to find amicable solutions. He's a quick study, with an analytical mind, to find solutions to the challenges our district faces now and to plan for the future.

Clem Lam

James has been a valued and active member of the Waimea Trails and Greenways committee since 2013. His leadership in the South Kohala Traffic safety committee and Waimea Community Association has given our committee a critical link to the larger Waimea community. His knowledge of how government works and his skill at map making has been an invaluable asset to our committee. He is among the leaders in a new corps of the Waimea Trails and Greenways committee to insure its future. His addition to the County Council for our district would be great for our Island.

Lani Olsen-Chong

James is as “grassroots” as you can get. He’s part of a deep rooted part-Hawaiian family. He was raised here, went to school here (until college), and knows our community – the things we love, and where we need help. As important, he’s good for his word.

Kim & Mike Pickard

We have watched James Hustace generously and competently volunteer in the Waimea community for many years. Whether the issue was traffic safety, redistricting, fire safety, Waimea Community Association affairs, or even coqui frogs, James has tirelessly given his time and talent to our community. Whether you agree with him on every issue or not, you can trust that James will listen openly, convene diverse voices, and moderate fairly. He will give our County Council his best and will work collaboratively with constituents and his fellow council members to build consensus and meet the diverse needs of District 9 residents.

Chris & Dayna Wong

As small, family-owned business owners, we must have a candidate who knows our challenges and Hawaii. James was born and raised here in the islands, an extremely important quality. He knows this place, and he knows the innate challenges that our community faces. He listens, is engaged, and is undoubtedly the candidate who will be able to represent us and move us forward. He is the change we have been waiting for.

Andy Wagner & Robyn Suzuki

Clare & Dan Bobo

James is such a blessing to our community. He is involved on every level and because of that he has established the important relationships with county and state officials that will be crucial for a position on the County Council. More importantly they respect him and enjoy working with him as he is a brilliant collaborator who listens with a calm demeanor. Who better to understand and address the needs of our district than the guy who grew up in it?

Sen. Lorraine Inouye

As your former District 4 Senator for North Hawai'i, which includes Waimea, Waikoloa, and North Kohala, I had the privilege of working closely with James Hustace on several significant infrastructure improvement projects. James has consistently demonstrated his ability to collaborate effectively with elected representatives, ensuring that crucial projects move forward. This is exactly the kind of leadership that Council District 9 and our entire island needs. I urge all District 9 voters to support James Hustace.

Hermine Baker & Niel Thomas

James Hustace has a long-standing honorable record of public service, civic leadership, and community involvement. He is local- and community-minded, having been involved from an early age. His orientation is big-picture and long-run in his goals for the entire community. His ideas are both innovative and practical. He instills in his constituents the confidence that he can and will make desired changes happen. He's a skilled negotiator whose attentive listening and genuine respect are trademarks. He is gracious and respectful. He is firm regarding what he believes in and supports -- but not confrontational.

Malama Solomon

Most know I've been involved politically for decades but my daughter just had her first child and this little guy is giving me a whole new sense of urgency about the future - what kind of Hawai'i and Waimea are we creating for our mo'opuna? James Hustace also thinks like this...he's a next generation leader thinking about both today and tomorrow.

Lynn Beittel & Matt Binder

As an older resident of the district, I’m thrilled to see a young, energetic, thoughtful and communicative candidate like James Hustace running for county council. He comes from a multi-ethnic background and has deep roots in the community. He was born and raised in Hawai’i and his family has lived here for generations. James is a great listener who strives to understand and help solve the problems facing the entire district.

-Lynn Beittel

Once in a long while someone comes along who is perfect for the job of county council - with the vision, work ethic, and cooperative personality to become a truly great politician. James is that kind of person and we are lucky to have him running in our district.

-Matt Binder

Jaisy Jardine

James Hustace is the real deal. He is trustworthy, follows through on his commitments, and knows North and South Kohala and its communities intimately. As a lifelong resident of Waimea, it speaks volumes to me that he knows us and what is essential, and his values align with many of the pillars that make our community what it is. In a time and environment focused on soundbites and fleeting opportunities, James is a refreshing breath of fresh air who is here to stay.

Patti Cook

I agree with the above comments by supporters from across the district about WHY James Hustace for County Council. What more can be said? And then I think about James agreeing to be a pooper scooper in the recent revival of our beloved Waimea Paniolo Parade. This says so much about him – he’s willing to do the necessary dirty work with a smile because it needed doing. And as a matter of fact, he was kept very busy throughout the parade because of the large number of horses in front of him, and large group of middle schoolers immediately behind him that he didn’t want stepping in you know what! This same work ethic and thoughtfulness helped our community thru the pandemic when James – as volunteer President of the community association - took monthly town meetings virtual and enlisted our State’s leading health care experts to provide the most current info, as well as community volunteers who were scrambling to be sure no one went hungry. “VOTE PALAKA!” says it all – a vote for James Hustace is a vote for someone willing to do the hard work because he genuinely cares about our wellbeing.

Jeramy Madrid & Mina Alcantara-Madrid

James Hustace stands out as a person of remarkable integrity, the likes of which I have rarely encountered in my lifetime. His commitment to our community is deeply rooted and unwavering, demonstrating a servant's heart in everything he does. Over the years, James has consistently shown a profound dedication to serving and uplifting our community, always prioritizing the needs and well-being of our residents.

His deep roots in Waimea and the broader District 9 area give him a unique and invaluable perspective on the issues and challenges we face. James's ability to connect with people, understand their concerns, and advocate for meaningful change is truly inspiring. He has a proven track record of working tirelessly to make our community a better place for everyone, and I am confident that he will continue to do so as our representative.

In James Hustace, we have a candidate who embodies the values and principles that are essential for effective and compassionate leadership. His integrity, dedication, and genuine care for our community make him the ideal choice for Hawaii Island County District 9. I wholeheartedly endorse James Hustace and urge my fellow residents to support him in this important election.

Makai Freitas

I have had the opportunity to get to know James Hustace well over the last few years. During that time, I have seen first hand how dedicated he is to helping our community. He volunteers his time and works tirelessly on a multitude of community projects. I have always admired his humility. This is why I support him.

Peter Pomeranze

James Hustace represents our future in many ways. He is fair, honest, and vigorously listens to and wishes to represent all of us to the best of his ability. He is not running to represent those who might re-elect him but all of his constituents. You can always count on his willingness to listen and that is as good as it gets.

Nancy Carr Smith

Aloha. My name is Nancy Carr Smith, and I am supporting James Hustace for County Council District 9. I have worked in the community with James over the last several years and have had the pleasure of getting to know him and his lovely wife. James is perfect for County Council. Not only is he educated in public administration, but he has a passion for being a servant leader. He is thoughtful, deliberate, and weighs all aspects of a topic before weighing in or speaking to a subject. He has excellent common sense, and he is calm and collected. These are excellent traits in a representative for our district. James is from Waimea, has multi-generational roots here, and loves this place that we all call home. He will work hard to address the subjects that are important to the community. Please join me in voting for James Hustace!
